5 Signs it Could be Time for New Dentures

All good things come to an end, and that includes your dentures. These prosthetics are a wonderful way to replace missing teeth, but unfortunately, they don’t last forever. With proper care and usage, you can expect yours to survive for around seven to ten years. Here are a few warning signs that it could be time to replace them.

Fit Changes

Your dentures need to fit securely to work properly. If you notice that they no longer feel as secure as they did when you first got them, this could indicate that it’s time to replace them. It is possible that your dentist can reline them, however this depends on how old they are and how poorly they fit, as well as if there is any other significant damage present.

Broken Crowns

The teeth of your dentures are what help you chew, smile, and speak properly. If they are loose, missing, or broken, they should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Speak to your dentist about which option is best, as damaged crowns do not automatically mean you need to replace the entire pair.

Broken Base

As vital as the crowns are, the base is arguably the most important part. This is what holds the crowns, as well as secures the dentures to your jaw. If this portion becomes damaged, you will need to replace them, as using a broken base can cause a number of health problems including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction.

Stains or Buildup

If you aren’t caring for your dentures properly, they can become stained or discolored over time. If you are unable to clean away the buildup, this is a good indication that it’s time for a new pair. Leaving them dirty can increase your risk of infection and host a variety of dangerous bacteria that could harm your oral health.

Unexplained Pain or Discomfort

If your dentures have become painful to wear, it’s time to upgrade to a new pair. You should not feel any discomfort while wearing them, so if you do, this is a sign that something is wrong.

The Importance of Denture Check-Ups

To maintain your dentures for as long as possible, be sure to abide by the following care schedule:

  • Remove your dentures for a full cleaning at least twice a day, scrubbing the entire prosthetic with a toothbrush and cleansing paste. Floss between each tooth, and then rinse well before putting them back in.
  • Remove them nightly and soak in a glass of water or denture soak while you sleep. Rinse before returning them to your mouth.
  • Visit your dentist twice a year for your bi-annual dental exams.
  • Visit your dentist every two years for denture checkups.
  • Notify your dentist immediately if you have any fit issues or damage. Do not wait for your next regularly scheduled appointment, as this can cause oral health problems and make denture damage worse.
  • Never use them for anything but food. No opening packaging, biting your nails, or chewing on inedible objects like pen caps.

Remember, your dentures weren’t meant to last a lifetime, but with proper care and usage they can last up to ten years. If you notice any changes in their fit or condition, contact your dentist at once for an evaluation. While some issues can be repaired, they could indicate it’s time to replace them.
